 Pastor David L. Perry

Pastoral History

Pastor David L. Perry answered his call to the Ministry in 1980 while a member of the Mt. Salem Baptist Church in Hickory Valley, TN under the leadership of Rev. Calvin Mason.  He was called to lead the flock of Bethlehem No. 1 Baptist Church in the fall of 1981.

Shortly after he was called to the ministry, he enrolled in the American Baptist Theological Seminary School Extension in Bolivar, TN where he received a diploma in Theology in 1985.  He furthered his education at the Jacksonville Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida receiving a Bachelors of Religious Art in Theology in 1994; a Masters of Religious Art & Christian Education in 1995; and a Doctorate Degree in Philosophy & Christian Psychology in 1996.  After volunteering for several years in the Pastoral Care Department at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, he joined the staff as a chaplain and was later appointed Coordinator of Chaplains.  Since retiring from Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in August of 2013, he has been instrumental in providing ministry services in Madison and Hardeman Counties.

Under his leadership at Bethlehem No. 1 Baptist Church, ten ministers have been called into the ministry of the gospel and four are currently pasturing flocks.  In 2000, Bethlehem was the first African American Church in a rural community to open a Family Life Center with a full gymnasium. The church was renovated in 1990 and again in 2007.

God has placed in Pastor Perry’s heart for Bethlehem “the house of bread” to be a light in the community. He established a community effort to join rural churches together across racial barriers called Jubilee Community Outreach where area churches fellowship throughout the year and have an annual community event.

A Community Outreach Bible Study (C.O.B.S) was established to offer Bible Study in Bolivar, TN., an outreach ministry, the Soul Center in Jackson, TN to focus on reaching souls for Christ and providing opportunities to study the word of God. Through this effort, early Sunday Morning Worship and a fellowship ministry for a local college is held.

In addition, the church is active in providing community activities through the Christian Brotherhood and Christian Women Outreach (CWO) Ministries.

Serving on the Board of Directors at Bolivar General Hospital, Pastor Perry is able to impact the delivery of health care services for the community. He is a past President of the Jackson Ministerial Alliance.

He is married to Doris Sain Perry and they have four children, Louise McCarley (David), David Perry, Jr., Sharron Murden and Frederick Perry (Tonya); nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He currently resides in Hardeman County.
